Ashawaug Farm

Ashawaug Farm is an Indigenous-owned, Indigenous-protected farm run by Dawn and Cassius Spears in what is now known as Ashaway, Rhode Island. The farm puts into practice concepts of Indigenous food sovereignty, Indigenous foodways, and sharing cultural knowledge with local Indigenous communities. Dawn is also an artist and craftsperson in various media, including drawing, painting, and doll-making. Together, Dawn and Cassius also share their agricultural knowledge in schools and other communities across the United States and internationally.

The Ashawaug Project is a 2-year project funded by NDN Collective, with the objectives of developing several online and in-person resources, workshops, and events that teach and share various aspects of Indigenous foodways.
